Top 10 Ranking Factors

Doing research for my trip to Chicago, one of my first actions, obviously, was to do a search for «seo chicago». The company that holds the top ranking on the search term in Google, actually sits on the same floor as I do. Great guys. From browsing their website, it only took me a couple of minutes to conclude that SEO Design Solutions know their SEO. After a few talks and discussions with the founder and CIO, Jeffrey Smith, we came up with this list, and thought it would be nice to share.

1. Understanding Deep Links and Internal Link Optimization. You should begin your SEO work by doing great internal link structuring. Decide what keywords are vital for your business and make sure you spread internal link juice to the subpages describing these products and services. Start sculpting your front page using crucial keywords in the anchor text. By doing this you are subliminally letting Google know that these are your key services and the subpages you want to rank on. This will also help you with the work of getting the crucial external links to your website. Remember, a certain page (i.e the first page) only holds a certain amount of link juice or link authority (based on the amount and authority of external links to that specific page), so make sure to spread the love wisely or you will fail. The fewer links on a page, the more love you give to each subpage.

2. Domain- and URL strategy. This has been a crucial part of Google´s algorithm for quite some time, and if you do a few searches, you will soon find how important having keywords in the domain name still is. If not in the domain name, keywords have great ranking value in the URL. Some forces even claim that Google Chrome May Remove Address Bar, which highligts the power of URL-keywords.

3. Flat site structure. Keeping the content close to your front page gives greater value for subpages.

4. Public Relations. PR creates high valued, authoritive links to your website. Make sure to follow up on the media coverage making sure you get backlinks to the source (i.e your website or blog post). When publishing Press Releases on Online Press Release Sites, don´t forget adding backlinks to your site.

5. Fresh Content and Quality Content. Content is still king. Creating quality content will give authority to your site, over time – The Grandfather Effect. Blogging is a perfect tool for keeping your site dynamic, and also works as a good link bait tool. Great or newsworthy content, gets great, relevant links.

6. Focus on keywords and page-by-page-SEO. Create subpages that are aiming to give great insight on the subject matter. Focus on the important keywords of which you want your rankings. Make sure you provide the subpage with sufficient internal link juice, and that you optimize it for at least three variations of the keyword (i.e. primary, plural and secondary).

7. Title tags and meta descriptions. Utilize the power of title tags to the fullest, and create well written, teasing click-boosters as meta descriptions. You deserve that click!

8. Anchor texts. Still plays a big part in the value of a link. However anchor texts shouldn´t be your greatest worry, just make sure the link is close to or related to relevant content.

9. Get links – always, all the time. One of our most successfull tactics has been doing speeches. Share your knowledge, and someone might blog about it ;)

10. Google Webmaster Tools. Your grade book – make sure you have straight A´s.

    Siden du nevner «seo chicago», så måtte jeg søke på «seo oslo», og der var nettsiden min på 2 plass. En som har klart å klatre over meg på lista :-(

    Nå har jeg ikke jobbet veldig aktiv for akkurat denne plasseringen, men jeg har noen teorier på hvorfor den får 1- 2 plassen. Så si ifra Fakiri, hvis jeg kan utdype det mer her i kommentarfeltet?
